"type":"photo","body":"%3Cp%3E%3Ca%20class%3D%22tumblr_blog%22%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fdynamicafrica.tumblr.com%2Fpost%2F44854445701%2Fmadam-efunroye-tinubu-was-among-the-most-prominent%22%20target%3D%22_blank%22%3Edynamicafrica%3C%2Fa%3E%3A%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cblockquote%3E%0A%3Cp%3E%3Cstrong%3EMadam%20Efunroye%20Tinubu%3C%2Fstrong%3E%20was%20among%20the%20most%20prominent%20and%20powerful%20Yoruba%20women%20in%20pre-colonial%20Nigeria%20%28early%20to%20mid%2019th%20century%29.%20Other%20renowned%20Yoruba%20women%20from%20that%20period%20were%20Iyalode%20Efunsetan%20Aniwura%20and%20Madam%20Omosa%2C%20both%20of%20whom%20deserve%20posts%20of%20their%20own.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EMadam%20Tinubu%20was%20an%20Egba%20woman%20born%20to%20a%20trading%20family%20in%20Abeokuta%20%28also%20known%20as%20Egbaland%29.%20After%20completing%20an%20apprenticeship%2C%20she%20headed%20to%20Badagry%2C%20Lagos%20where%20she%20started%20trading%20in%20tobacco%20and%20salt.%20She%20later%20expanded%20her%20trade%20to%20include%20slaves%20who%20she%20sold%20to%20European%20slave%20traders.%20As%20a%20shrewd%20businesswoman%2C%20Madam%20Tinubu%20became%20the%20most%20important%20middleman%20in%20trade%20between%20Europeans%20and%20the%20Yorubaland%20interior%20by%20creating%20large%20trading%20networks.%20Madam%20Tinubu%E2%80%99s%20wealth%20and%20connections%20led%20her%20to%20meddle%20in%20politics.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EWith%20her%20trade%20and%20wealth%2C%20she%20was%20able%20to%20lend%20support%20to%20military%20efforts%2C%20which%20in%20turn%20made%20her%20more%20powerful.%20Although%20she%20was%20not%20from%20Lagos%2C%20she%20began%20taking%20interest%20in%20Lagos%20politics.%20In%201846%2C%20King%20Akintoye%20of%20Lagos%20faced%20exile%20and%20sought%20refuge%20in%20Badagry%20with%20Madam%20Tinubu.%20Being%20the%20badass%20that%20she%20was%2C%20Madam%20Tinubu%20ignited%20and%20supported%20a%20movement%20to%20return%20King%20Akintoye%20to%20regain%20the%20throne%20he%20had%20lost%2C%20she%20was%20successful.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EIn%201851%2C%20after%20regaining%20his%20throne%20King%20Akintoye%20invited%20Madam%20Tinubu%20to%20Lagos%20where%20she%20further%20expanded%20her%20business%20and%20political%20activities.%20Due%20to%20her%20influence%20in%20Akintoye%E2%80%99s%20court%2C%20rumours%20abounded%20that%20Madam%20Tinubu%20was%20the%20real%20power%20behind%20the%20throne.%20Madam%20Tinubu%E2%80%99s%20influence%20was%20such%20that%20when%20Prince%20Dosunmu%20succeeded%20King%20Akintoye%2C%20she%20continued%20to%20hold%20a%20space%20in%20Lagos%20politics.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EToday%20Madam%20Tinubu%20is%20called%20a%20patriot%20by%20some%2C%20I%20am%20not%20too%20comfortable%20with%20that%20term%20because%20technically%20there%20was%20no%20%E2%80%98Nigeria%E2%80%99%20when%20she%20was%20alive.%20However%2C%20Madam%20Tinubu%20did%20take%20a%20stance%20against%20the%20British%20in%20their%20efforts%20to%20further%20flex%20their%20colonial%20muscles%20into%20Yorubaland.%20In%201855%2C%20she%20spearheaded%20a%20campaign%20against%20Brazilian%20and%20Sierra%20Leonean%20immigrants%20in%20Lagos%20who%20she%20felt%20were%20actively%20trying%20to%20oppose%20the%20King%20and%20did%20not%20respect%20local%20customs.%20Apparently%2C%20her%20actions%20against%20these%20immigrants%20worried%20the%20British%20%28who%20had%20been%20keeping%20an%20eye%20on%20her%20since%20she%20helped%20King%20Akintoye%20regain%20this%20throne%29.%20By%20supporting%20the%20local%20king%20and%20insisting%20that%20foreign%20residents%20respect%20local%20customs%2C%20Madam%20Tinubu%E2%80%99s%20activities%20were%20getting%20in%20the%20way%20of%20British%20colonial%20and%20mission%20policies.%20In%201856%2C%20colonial%20authorities%20in%20Lagos%20deported%20her%20from%20Lagos%20to%20her%20home%20town%2C%20Abeokuta%20in%201856.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EI%20believe%20it%20was%20in%20Abeokuta%20that%20Madam%20Tinubu%20developed%20and%20adopted%20a%20staunchly%20anti-British%20stance.%20She%20eventually%20stopped%20selling%20slaves%20to%20the%20Europeans%2C%20it%20seems%2C%20after%20she%20learnt%20of%20the%20%E2%80%98evils%20of%20transatlantic%20slavery%E2%80%99%2C%20that%20is%2C%20the%20differences%20between%20the%20treatment%20of%20domestic%20slaves%20and%20those%20sold%20to%20the%20Europeans.%20Apparently%20she%20fought%20European%20slave%20traders%20to%20liberate%20slaves%20in%20Lagos%20and%20thereabouts%20however%20there%20is%20no%20mention%20if%20Madam%20Tinubu%20liberated%20the%20slaves%20she%20owned%20when%20she%20became%20anti-imperialist.%3C%2Fp%3E%0A%3Cp%3EIn%20Abeokuta%2C%20she%20traded%20gunpowder%2C%20bullets%20and%20other%20firearms%20%28she%20also%20traded%20in%20palm%20oil%20and%20food%20produced%20on%20her%20massive%20plantations%29.%20She%20concerned%20herself%20with%20the%20Abeokuta-Dahomey%20wars%20that%20were%20taking%20place%20at%20that%20time%2C%20and%20through%20doing%20so%20became%20involved%20in%20Egba%20politics.%20Madam%20Tinubu%20would%20make%20loans%20to%20
